After visiting Notre Dame Cathedral, give in to the temptation of Chartres and its beautiful gourmet addresses. Sweet or savoury, the pleasures are multiple and of a rare quality. Let’s not forget that the region was known as the breadbasket of France! This is a gourmet trail which you can take over 2 hours to 2 days, depending on the tastings…

Tasting in the city

In front of the Cathedral, at the corner of Rue des Changes, you will enter the Maison Monarque, where you can enjoy a chic snack (Pâté de Chartres, bowls…) and beautiful homemade pastries such as Paris-Chartres (chou paste, praline custard). When you leave, don’t forget to have a Pèlerin, a cake on which the labyrinth of the cathedral is drawn…

A stone’s throw from Rue des Changes, on Rue du Soleil d’Or, you will find the Pâtisserie de Chartres, famous for its choupinettes, small pastry puffs filled with custard with varied aromas, or its Mentchikoffs, choco-pralines coated with Swiss meringue…

Renowned for its old vintages and its great Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, the Cave du Marché is accessible to all for a selection of bottles dedicated to great and beautiful occasions (Ferraton en Rhône, Anne Gros and JP Tollot…), and you will be warmly welcomed and given good advice…

Wine and chocolate go so well together. With this in mind, push open the door to the Maison Thuriès, elected best artisan in France, which is represented by the Coutant family. You will find chocolate creations that will delight you.

A few meters further, Les Rois Mages is first and foremost an artisanal coffee roaster that offers excellent coffees but also a tea/coffee/tasting room where you will be able to enjoy homemade chocolate as well as the superb rums of the owner… or some natural wines.

Then, turn right to reach the Rue de la Pie, now a must-see gourmet street! Here you will find excellence everywhere, with a focus on the region’s produce.

Takeaway tasting

The Ferme Sainte Suzanne, run by the friendly Richard Hamel, is a temple of cheeses: from all regions, their ripening is always perfect (Selles-sur-Cher, superb comté, rare Shropshire…) and the shop is an invitation to gluttony (Bordier butter, local produce, excellent wine selection).

To balance your meal, head to Aux 3 Choux, where the welcome is very pleasant and the fruits and vegetables are selected with great care… Homemade preparations (soups, compotes, etc.) are remarkable for both their taste and freshness. Opposite, at the Boucherie de la Pie, Denis Neveu selects exceptional meats (black-legged pork, mature beef…) that he embellishes with a skilled hand.

Continuing your gourmet journey, be sure to stop at Villa Toscane, an excellent Italian caterer that offers high-quality produce (charcuterie, pasta, wines). Thursday’s homemade pizzas are second to none, as are the polpettes…

A few metres away, one of Chartres’ best patisseries, Carré Vanille, brings modernity to this sweet art (superb citrus tarts, delicious chocolates…) and is always busy with visitors…

Next, take the time to enjoy a good coffee. Crossing the Place Marceau, then turning right onto the Place du Cygne, enter the Brûlerie Chartraine, which still roasts in the old-fashioned style. Its homemade blends are exquisite and to be consumed on the spot from a Jura coffee maker. A simple and absolute pleasure.

To conclude this journey rich in discoveries of all kinds, it is important to visit Martin and Yohann at the Cave Saint Lubin, Rue du Soleil d'Or, which follows on from Rue Noël Ballay. They will offer you a personalised selection which is constantly evolving towards new winemakers, with the aim of offering the very best value for money. Be sure to discover the "K-Pot" of the Clos Troteligotte, a Cahors that showcases the Malbec variety to perfection…
